the short version
Apple now sells its pro apps as one subscription called Creator Studio: Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage, plus extra AI features and content in Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform. I signed up to find out which of these earn a place in how I already work. I’m not reviewing the whole bundle.
- Worth testing for me: Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Keynote.
- Maybe later: Compressor, Numbers.
- Skipping: Motion, MainStage, Freeform.
- Tested so far: only Logic Pro, and only partly.
- Already using: GarageBand, Apple’s free music app. How the two compare.
what I make now
- songs
AI tools write and sing the song. I build the lyric video as code, timed to every beat, and render it on my laptop.
- explainers
Short cartoons, role plays and interactive pages for small businesses and learners.
- pages
Dashboards and fact sheets, like the ones on the home page.
Each one has the same weak spots: fixing a song after it’s generated, getting lyric timing right, smoothing the final cut, and making thumbnails and stills. Those weak spots are what I’m testing the apps against.

Better instrument sounds than GarageBand; cleaning up AI songs
- for me
- I already compose some backing tracks as code. The AI writes a score, GarageBand plays it, and the video takes its timing from the score, so every note lands on screen at the right moment. Logic should do the same job with better sounds.
- worked
- I connected Logic to my AI assistant and it could set the tempo, add instrument tracks, and start and stop playback.
- didn’t
- Writing notes straight into Logic failed every time. The workaround is to write a MIDI file and import it, then move the parts onto real instruments by hand.
- next
- Session Players, Apple’s AI drummer, bassist and keyboard player that follow a chosen style. Stem Splitter, which separates a song into vocals, drums, bass and the rest: AI songs sometimes put a long instrumental gap after a chorus, and splitting the stems may let me cut it without regenerating the song. Mastering Assistant, to see whether it can even out loudness across songs.

Crossfades, a 9:16 cut, beat markers
- for me
- My videos come out of the render already finished, so any change means rebuilding. One video’s hard cuts felt abrupt and I rebuilt the whole thing for one-second fades. Re-laying out a 16:9 video for phones took a second full project. I want to know how far Final Cut’s reframing gets on its own, and how its beat detection compares with the beat analyser I use now.
- watch
- Transcript search works in US English only. Several of my songs are in Mandarin or Japanese, and lyric timing is where I lose the most time.

Thumbnails, posters, fixing AI stills
- for me
- Every video and project card here needs a poster image, and many of my videos use AI stills. I want to know whether background removal, image repair and detail enhancement do these jobs on the laptop, so I can stop sending images to an online tool.

slides

Turning an outline into a first deck
- for me
- Keynote’s new outline-to-slides feature is in beta. I’ll test it on a talk I’ve given before, so I can judge its slides against ones I already know work.
garageband or logic?
I already use GarageBand, so the real question is what Logic adds. They share the same sound engine. GarageBand is the free, simpler one; Logic adds the tools for fixing, mixing and finishing a song. A GarageBand project opens in Logic with everything kept, but a Logic project can’t go back to GarageBand.
- band members
GarageBand has a virtual drummer. Logic’s Session Players add bass, keyboard and synth players that follow the same song.
- finished songs
Logic’s Stem Splitter separates a song into vocals, drums, bass and the rest. GarageBand can’t.
- mixing
GarageBand gives each track volume, pan and a few effects. Logic has a full mixer, with automation for nearly every setting.
- fixing
Logic can move the timing or pitch of one note or a whole track, and can find and follow the tempo of a recorded song.
- finishing
Logic has Mastering Assistant, a much bigger sound library, a full score editor and Dolby Atmos. GarageBand keeps all of this basic or leaves it out.
For me, one difference matters more than all of these. My AI assistant can already drive GarageBand from start to finish: write the score, play it, export the audio and check the file. With Logic it can set the tempo and add tracks, but not yet write the notes.
- start
- GarageBand, for composing from a score. It works, and the score still gives the video its exact timing.
- finish
- Logic, opening the same project to swap in better instruments, mix it and master it.
- repair
- Logic again, for AI-generated songs: split the stems to cut a long gap or make a version without vocals.
- check
- Whether Session Players and Stem Splitter work in my copy of Logic is my first test. The result goes in the Logic row above.
the rest of the bundle
maybe later
- Compressor Smaller files for the web. My current tools already do this.
- Numbers Magic Fill suggests cell contents from patterns, which could help with tracking sheets.
skipping
- Motion I already build motion graphics as code.
- MainStage It’s for live performance, and I don’t perform.
- Freeform No current use.
what I’m watching for
- who has the file
If the subscription stops, Final Cut, Logic and Pixelmator projects stay on the computer, but they can’t be opened or edited until it’s renewed. Before relying on any of them, I’ll keep an exported copy of every project in a format I can open without the subscription.
- where the AI runs
Apple says some features use third-party models and have usage limits. I’ll check which features those are before using them on anything private.
- overlap
A new app has to beat the tool I already use. If it only matches it, I’m not switching.
I’ll add results here as I try each app, with what I asked it to do, what happened and whether I kept it. An app that earns its place moves to my toolkit.
